Lunch at Lady and Sons
On our first full day in Savannah we had lunch at Lady and Sons. If you don't know, Lady and Sons is the restaurant run by Paula Deen. She's kind of like a Southern version of the Barefoot Contessa. We weren't going to go, but then we decided what the hell. I guess we hadn't had enough Southern food. As long as we wouldn't have to wait in line, we thought it would be a fun place to go for lunch. So, it being November, we walked right in for lunch. No wait.
Within moments of sitting down were had a plates of hoe cakes and a cornbread muffin in front of us. They were pretty good. It was impressive how quickly the food started appearing in front of us. I guess that's Southern hospitality.
We opted for the buffet. It would be a quick way to get our lunch as we had an appointment for a private carriage ride. Walking up to the buffet I was a little overwhelmed. Facing me was one of the biggest piles of fried chicken I have ever seen. I stacked my plate immediately with the chicken, followed by collared greens, macaroni and for some strange reason I also picked up a piece of lasagna. I'm not sure why I picked up the lasagna. Anyway, the chicken was very good. Not Ezell's good, but some of the best fried chicken I have had. The macaroni and cheese was also fantastic. As good as my mother's. In fact that's how I would describe eating at Lady and Sons. Imagine really good home cooking. I mean really good. There's nothing terribly original about what they serve, but what they do they do well.
For dessert we had peach cobbler and banana puddings. I loved them both, but just like the main body of the meal, it didn't blow my mind. It was just well executed home cooking.
Overall, I quite enjoyed my lunch at Lady and Sons. The food was delicious, though it did put me into a bit of a food coma. I don't think that three pieces of fried chicken plus a pile of other sides is all that good for one's energy level. I did love it though, but I'm not sure that I'll go back now what I've been. There are so many places I want to try. If you haven't been though and you're craving some Southern home cooking, I could not recommend Lady and Sons more.
